Menashe Kadishman (1932-2015)

Kadishman was one of Israel's most celebrated artists, internationally renowned for his paintings, sculptures, and graphic works. Best known for his vibrant, expressive depictions of sheep and monumental steel sculptures, Kadishman developed a distinctive visual language that made his work instantly recognizable.

His lifelong fascination with the sheep motif originated during his youth as a shepherd at the Kibbutz, an experience that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. Over time, the sheep evolved from a personal memory into a universal symbol of innocence, identity, sacrifice, and the human condition. Through bold colors, expressive brushwork, and deeply emotional compositions, Kadishman transformed this simple subject into one of the most iconic images in contemporary Israeli art.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1932, Kadishman studied under Moshe Sternschuss at the Avni Institute of Art and Design before continuing his artistic development in London in 1959. There, he became associated with the international avant-garde and began exhibiting alongside leading contemporary artists.

Throughout his distinguished career, Kadishman represented Israel at major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, and held numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and prominent galleries around the world. His works are included in the collections of leading museums and prestigious private collections across Europe, the United States, and Israel.

Today, Kadishman's colorful sheep remain among the most beloved and sought-after images in Israeli art, admired for their emotional resonance, expressive energy, and enduring visual appeal.
